Arden Asbæk Gallery is pleased to present "Follow the Tails", a duo exhibition featuring Danish photo-based artist Tine Bek and Swedish visual artist Vera Ljunggren. This collaborative exhibition unfolds as a visual dialogue between the two artists, who draw inspiration from one another in themes, motifs, and color palettes.
Rooted in the tradition of fables and fairytales, "Follow the Tails" evokes the timeless atmosphere of cautionary tales told in childhood: beware the cunning fox, and be mindful of what may lurk in the shadowy depths of the forest. These tales - passed down orally through generations - serve as a shared point of departure for Bek and Ljunggreen who have created and selected the works for the exhibition in dialogue.
The deliberate misspelling in the title, “Tails” rather than “Tales”, not only plays on the anthropomorphism of these stories, but also the co-existence of existential complexity and childlike delights. Bek and Ljunggreen’s artistic conversation explores themes of mysticism, morality, and nature, with a particular nod to the work of French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine (b. 1621), whose collections of allegorical stories used animals to reflect on human behavior and ethics.
In "Follow the Tails", the familiar becomes subtly unsettling. Everyday scenes are rendered with an uneasy edge - through unexpected cropping, surreal lighting, or dissonant color - imbuing the works with a quiet sense of foreboding. Characters and places appear ambiguous, mirroring the moral uncertainty of the tales that inspired them. This tension speaks to what awaits those who stray from the path - reminding viewers that even the most enchanting stories can carry darker truths beneath the surface.
